The Thread That Binds
"The Thread That Binds, Interviews with Private Practice Bookbinders,” 2010 by Pamela Train Leutz. Sewn boards binding with wrap around cover. Cover and board folios screenprinted by the artist with reworked vintage foliage. Initials of each binder interviewed, foil stamped using a Kwik Print. Title letterpress printed by the artist. Initialed by the artist on the back board folio. Sewing for the binding uses both a paired link stitch and single cord supports. Cords embroidered onto the front and back boards using the couching method.
Bookbinding requires hands on training passed generationally between teachers and students. The cover of the book is a bookbinding family tree representing each of the binders interviewed for the book. Sewing supports are carried onto the front and back cover to reiterate the title and the idea that binders are quite literally linked to one through process.
