Flexi Notebook with Hooked Covers

This binding is based off a widely available commercial notebook. There’s no secret to its utilitarian construction. Cardstock covers are sewn in with the rest of the text block, making it a quick and useful book. It’s decorative paper spine is an opportunity for customization and provides additional support.

Stab Bindings

There are many variations of this style of binding. They combine decorative stitching, single sheets or folios and a folded paper cover. The cover could be made from participants own 2D work or from provided decorative paper. Two structures could be taught in one session.

Sewn Paper Bindings

In this workshop students will make simple books using different sewn binding structures. Each book will make use of a different cover structure. These basic books make excellent notebooks and are the building blocks for anyone interested in the book format. Possible structures : Pamphlet with a Paper Jacket, Double Pamphlet with a Tipped Paper Cover, Chain Stitch with a Reinforced Spine, Zig Zag with a Reinforced Spine

Creative Journals

Exposed Binding with a Flexible Leather Cover

These books consist of a leather wrapper and can utilize a variety of exposed stitching. The binding is both decorative and structural securing the sections to the cover. This construction allows the book to open fully and lay mostly flat. Soft sided books of this type make well-traveled journals or sketchbooks and gain character with age.

German Stiffened Paper Binding

Double fan adhesive text block with a reinforced paper cover. This book gets trimmed and the corners rounded to enhance it’s finished quality.

Duration: 3hrs with an additional pick up day. (Books must be allowed to dry fully before they are trimmed.)

Rechōsō: Japanese Multi-Section Book

4 needles are used simultaneously with a simple crisscross stitch to form the binding of this elegant book. The binding is exposed, making each material choice an opportunity to add visual interest to the book.

Pocket Books

Perfectly sized, flexible paper books that fit in your pocket or purse.

Level: Beginner

Chap Books

Chap books are traditionally simple books with short texts, inexpensive and readily available. In this workshop, students will make several books by folding or sewing printed paper sheets. Each book will make use of a different structure. Students will work with printed texts to learn imposition and other basic bookbinding skills.
